  • Founder of Initiative to Educate Afghan Women to Speak at RSC Sept. 22

    Inspired by the plight of Afghan women during the reign of the Taliban, Paula Nirschel, a former community mental health worker, founded the Rhode Island based Initiative to Educate Afghan Women in 2002. Committed to making a difference in the lives of young Afghan women, Nirschel started the program determined to offer an education to some of the country's highly motivated young women.

    The Louis & Hortense Rubin Community Fellows Program has awarded $39,000 in grants to four community projects in Rensselaer County that aim to make a difference on issues as diverse as childhood obesity, search and rescue, inner city school education, and independent media as an outlet for youth in troubled neighborhoods.

    The Sage Colleges has exceeded all expectations for fundraising this year despite the challenging economy and sharp drops in giving to colleges across the nation. Sage raised a total of $7.4 million, including annual giving; an endowment challenge; corporate, government and foundation giving; and other major gifts.
