Team Mission

The campus Behavioral Intervention Team (previously operating as the CARE Team) engages in proactive and collaborative approaches to identify, assess and mitigate risks associated with students, faculty, staff and visitors exhibiting concerning behaviors, thoughts, or circumstances. By partnering with members of the community, BIT strives to promote individual student, faculty and staff well-being and success while prioritizing community safety.

The team is led by the Director of Residence Life, Grace Giancola, and includes the Associate Vice President of Student Life of Student Wellness, Tawana Davis, Director of Student Life Operations, Chelsea Ahl, and Deans of Students Sharon Murray and Stacy Gonzalez, along with representatives from Public Safety and Title IX. Other areas are consulted and brought into discussion on an as-needed basis.

Gator Support Team

The Behavioral Intervention Team functions as part of the larger Gator Support Team, providing specialized support to high-level student concerns and potential behavioral threats.

BIT Vision

The vision of the Behavioral Intervention Team is to provide a safe and supportive learning environment while assisting in intervening with someone before their behaviors reach a critical level.

The role of the Team is to:

  1. Provide consultation and support to faculty, staff, administration and students in assisting individuals who display concerning or disruptive behaviors;
  2. Gather information to assess situations involving individuals who display concerning or disruptive behaviors;
  3. Educate and empower the campus community to recognize, report and effectively address aberrant, dangerous, threatening and concerning behaviors;
  4. Recommend appropriate intervention strategies;
  5. Connect individuals with needed campus and community resources; and
  6. Monitor ongoing behavior of individuals who have displayed disruptive or concerning behavior.

Submitting a Referral to the Gator Support Team

Sage uses the online GatorCentral referral form that all community members can access to refer troubling or concerning behavior. Sage community members can submit any concern regarding a student (including those intended for BIT) through GatorCentral. This system allows for any student concern to be reviewed and referred to the appropriate individuals or areas on campus who can best support them. If the referral identifies concerning student behaviors or safety concerns, the Gator Support Team will typically route the referral to BIT for intervention and follow up.

If you have any questions about the Behavioral Intervention Team, reach out to Director of Residence Life Grace Giancola.

All immediate threats or concerns about impending violence should be directed to Public Safety via the Emergency Dispatch Center at 518-244-3177.
