Study Abroad Scholarships

There are several opportunities to assist in covering the costs to study abroad. In order to discuss any of these opportunities, meet with the Study Abroad Director. None of these scholarships are available for short-term, faculty-led programs.

For Semester or Year Long Study Programs

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers scholarships for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies and internships abroad.

For Semester or Year Long Study Programs

Fund for Education Abroad invests in promising students with financial need who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet the eligibility requirements may participate on any international education program that meets their academic objectives. Scholarships range from $1,250-$10,000 and can be applied for programs that run for at least 28 days.

Deadline for Summer, Fall or Academic Year: 2nd Friday of January at 12:00 pm (EST).

For Semester or Year Long Study Programs

Katherine Disbrow Johnson graduated from Russell Sage College in 1929 with a degree in secretarial sciences. She was a very active alumna, receiving RSC Alumnae Association’s highest honor, the Crockett Medal. She was a generous donor of both time and money to the college. Kay was very active with volunteer work for charitable organizations while working full time.

Later in life she became more politically involved and assisted with local political campaigns. Kay was able to travel extensively and worked in the travel industry. She believed that traveling to other countries would open up traveler’s viewpoints and help to bring about world peace. It was her intent that this endowed fund assist all Sage students in having the opportunity to study and travel abroad.

For Semester, Year, and Short Term Study Abroad Opportunities

This scholarship was given as a gift by the Student Government Association to be used to provide an annual scholarship(s) for study abroad by a Russell Sage College student. This scholarship can be used to assist in the cost of all study abroad.

For Short Term Travel Opportunities

The Susan C. Scrimshaw’s Student Travel Fund is awarded to students who will be traveling to volunteer, present at a national or regional conference, or pursue experiential learning as a full-time Russell Sage College undergraduate or graduate student.

Cynthia Crocco Spector (RSC ’74) established the Cynthia Crocco Spector (’74) and Sherman David Spector Fellowship Fund in recognition of her education at Russell Sage College and Dr. Sherman David Spector’s tenure as Professor of History at Russell Sage College. This fund is intended for RSC female students who are current U.S. citizens who wish to travel, study, intern, or conduct research abroad.  First preference will be given to students who are majoring in History, Political Science, or International Studies.  Second preference will be given to students studying in an international oriented major. If no one meets these two major criteria, then the fellowship will be offered to any other RSC female student with U.S. Citizenship. For more information, contact Dr. Steven Leibo.

Family and friends established the Nancy Parker Neumann (RSC 06), Memorial Travel Award with the intent to recognize Nancy’s commitment to correct social injustices and to support other Russell Sage College students’ efforts to study, travel and experience firsthand these issues in an effort to eradicate them. Russell Sage College students enrolled in the Nutrition program have a new opportunity to extend their education by studying abroad. Former Nutrition Associate Professor Millie Estes has established the Guy Torre Travel Award in memory of her brother; Estes hopes his award will allow Nutrition students to learn about and participate in different lifestyles and cultures. The award will be granted to two Nutrition students annually; the money will be used to offset travel expenses related to a Sage-sanctioned Study Abroad program. Students who win this award are required to present about their travel experience. This professional presentation using Power Point slides will take place during the annual Nutrition Networking Night.

The Doris Adams Ferguson ’53 Memorial Fund for Sociology has been endowed by James T. Ferguson, Sr., in honor of his wife, Doris Adams Ferguson, RSC ’53. The award provides funding to support travel, field study, or related expenses for one or more Sociology majors who are engaged in a baccalaureate thesis, senior project, internship, or advanced study. Upon project completion, the recipient of this award will publish a written report of her findings/observations. She will also present her findings in a public forum. Applications can be obtained from Dr. Napierski-Prancl, Director of Sociology (Hart Hall 215).
